cathode, while oxidation occurs to anions at the anode. The electrodes do not
touch one another but are electrically connected by the electrolyte.
4.
Batteries are classified into primary and secondary forms:
5.
Primary batteries are designed to be used until exhausted of energy then
discarded. Their chemical reactions are generally not reversible, so they cannot
be recharged. When the supply of reactants in the battery is exhausted, the
battery stops producing current and is useless. However, not all disposable
batteries are the same. The components of a battery's electrochemical cells play
a significant role in its performance and applications. Zinc-carbon batteries are
the most common type, thanks to their low cost and reliable performance. In
comparison, batteries like alkaline batteries and mercuric-oxide batteries serve a
more niche part.
6.
Secondary batteries can be recharged, they can have their chemical
reactions reversed by applying
to the cell. This regenerates the
original chemical reactants, so they can be used, recharged, and used again
multiple times. After a rechargeable battery exhausts its electrochemical energy,
an external electric current can reverse the chemicals back into their original
state, ready to repeat the cycle of electricity production all over again.
