Essential Equipment for Nuclear Power Plants with Thermal-Neutron Vessel-Type Reactors - page 8

INTRODUCTION
National projects in Russia require reliable fuel and energy sources, and nuclear
power engineering plays the crucial role in development of national economy.
Russian nuclear power engineering development programs provide for construction
of nuclear power plants (NPP) with light-water energetic reactors (VVER) used as the
thermal energy source. With regard to the foregoing, it is essential to study configurations
of critical equipment of both existing and newly designed enhanced-safety VVER plants.
This textbook places much emphasis on issues of designing of critical equipment of
the reactor «island» of nuclear power plants.
The first chapter
provides schematic diagrams of nuclear power plants, which are
the starting point in designing of any plant. Any reactor has two crucial elements ‒ a ther-
mionic fuel element and, therefore, a fuel assembly.
The second chapter
details all known already operating and projected fuel assem-
blies manufactured both by Russian companies and by world leaders in this field.
The third chapter
considers configurations of VVER (PWR) thermal-neutron ves-
sel-type reactors with capacity ranging from 300 MW (VBER-300 unit) to 1500 MW
(UVR-1500 unit). The chapter highlights arrangement of equipment in the containment,
issues of nuclear safety, and emergency modes. Further, it describes enhanced safety reac-
tors (VPBER-600).
The fourth chapter
describes configurations of both horizontal and vertical steam
generators.
The fifth chapter
sets forth configurations of primary coolant pumps.
The sixth chapter
deals with the concept of the VVER reactor NPP-2006 project,
which is implemented in the current information environment and in accordance with the
requirements to nuclear and radiation safety.
Everything provided in this book matches up-to-date notions of configurations of
nuclear reactors, steam generators, pumps and heat exchanges of top-notch nuclear power
plants.
This textbook will be handy for students of higher educational institutions specializ-
ing in power engineering.
